The Golden Retriever AKC
Standard
The Golden Retriever is a sturdy, muscular dog of medium size, famous for the dense, lustrous coat of gold that gives the breed its name. The broad head, with its friendly and intelligent eyes, short ears, and straight muzzle, is a breed hallmark. In motion, Goldens move with a smooth, powerful gait, and the feathery tail is carried, as breed fanciers say, with a “merry action.” Goldens are outgoing, trustworthy, and eager-to-please family dogs, and relatively easy to train. They take a joyous and playful approach to life and maintain this puppyish behavior into adulthood. These energetic, powerful gundogs enjoy outdoor play. For a breed built to retrieve waterfowl for hours on end, swimming and fetching are natural pastimes.
History
& Family
In 2014, a family tragedy struck. A lovely lady, who we happened to know, felt a strong desire to offer her year and a half Golden Retriever to us as a gift. Her name was Mabel Mae. She was beautiful, dark red, and a smile that seemed to be constant. We fell in love immediately. My girls were 6 and 5 at the time. The bond was instant. I truly believe God brought us Mabel during the darkest time. She brought comfort and joy when we ourselves didn’t have any. My one daughter couldn’t sleep and had a real fear at night, so Mabel would quietly walk into her room and lay down. By morning, my daughter would be found asleep on Mabel.
Sadly, we lost Mabel 3 years later from an unforeseen ruptured spleen. Nothing could be done. Extremely rare, and extremely sad. Needless to say, we knew a Golden Retriever would be our next choice to hopefully fill that large hole that Mabel left. With prayer and careful researching, we found Nellie. A Pearl/White Retriever that looked just like a baby Polar Bear. To honor Mabel Mae, Nellie became Nellie Mae. She is family, and she does not miss out on family fun.
Dogs have a magical way to bring healing and joy. These dogs are family, so it’s personal as well. We will have a difficult time parting with them, but believe if sent to the right home, will be such a blessing to their Forever Family. We are obviously new to this whole process but had in mind to have at least 1 litter so our kids could experience the puppies, but also the responsibility. If you choose one of ours, I hope you know they have been loved, held, cared for, and ready for a home that will do just the same.
